If you’re considering a dental implant, you’ve probably already read what one is — a titanium post that replaces a missing tooth root, topped with a crown that looks and feels natural. What’s less often explained is what actually happens to you, appointment by appointment, over the months it takes to get there. It’s a longer journey than a single visit, and knowing what’s coming at each stage makes the whole thing far less daunting. Here’s exactly what to expect.
Most patients are surprised to learn that a dental implant typically takes between three and nine months from first consultation to final crown. Sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on how quickly you heal and whether extraction or bone grafting is needed first. The good news is that almost all of that time is healing in the background, not chair time. In practice, you’re looking at a handful of appointments spread across several months, not weeks of back-to-back visits.
Everything starts with a thorough consultation. We’ll carry out a full examination, go through your medical history, and take X-rays or 3D scans to assess the quality and volume of bone in your jaw. This isn’t just a formality — it’s what lets us plan the exact position and angle of the implant, avoiding nerves and sinuses and giving it the best possible chance of staying stable for decades. This is also the appointment where we talk through cost and payment options, so there are no surprises before you commit to anything.
Not everyone needs this step. It depends entirely on your individual case. If the tooth is still in place and needs to come out, that’s usually quick and often done at the same visit as your assessment, or shortly after.
Bone grafting is a little more involved. If a tooth has been missing for a while, the jawbone underneath can thin out, and there may not be quite enough there to support an implant securely. A graft simply builds that area back up before the implant goes in — it’s a common step, not a sign that anything’s gone wrong, and it typically adds a few months to the overall timeline while it heals.
This is the appointment most people picture when they think of “getting an implant.” Under local anaesthetic, the titanium post is placed into the jawbone, in the exact position mapped out at your consultation. Depending on how many implants you’re having, the appointment itself typically takes between 30 and 90 minutes.
Most patients report mild discomfort afterward rather than severe pain, and it’s usually manageable with standard over-the-counter pain relief. Some swelling or tenderness for a few days is completely normal — by the following week, most people are back to their usual routine.
What happens next is mostly invisible, but it’s the part that makes the whole implant work: over three to six months, your jawbone gradually fuses to the titanium post in a process called osseointegration. It’s what turns the implant from “something placed in your jaw” into a genuinely permanent part of it.
During this time, daily life carries on almost exactly as normal — you can eat, speak, and go about your routine without much thought. If the implant is somewhere visible, we can also talk through temporary tooth options to fill the gap while healing completes.
Once we’ve confirmed the implant has fully fused with the bone, a small connector piece called an abutment is attached on top. It’s a minor, straightforward procedure, and your gums usually just need a week or two to settle around it before the next step.
This is where the finishing touches happen. We’ll take impressions or digital scans to custom-make a crown that matches the shape, size, and shade of your surrounding teeth. At your final appointment, the crown is fitted, your bite is checked, and any small adjustments are made until it feels completely natural.
For most patients, this is the moment the whole journey has been building toward — the first look in the mirror at a smile that’s simply whole again.
Caring for an implant is refreshingly simple: brush and floss it just as you would a natural tooth, keep up with routine check-ups, and avoid putting excessive force on it in the first few weeks while everything settles. With proper care, dental implants can genuinely last decades — for many patients, it’s a one-time investment in a permanent solution.
Every implant journey looks a little different, and the only way to know your own timeline is with a proper assessment. With over 28 years established in Herongate, our team has guided a great many patients through this exact process, from that first consultation right through to the final reveal.
