A bridge is a fixed replacement for a missing tooth or teeth.
When you have a missing tooth or teeth, you may wonder if anything can be done to fill the gap. A dental bridge uses the teeth either side of the gap as a secure anchor to keep the replacement in place permanently.
During your consultation, we can help you determine if bridges are a suitable option for you.
What are the main advantages of a Bridge?
Replace missing teeth so you have no gaps.
Maintain facial shape.
Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position, avoiding future orthodontic problems.
Restore chewing and speaking ability.
Restore your smile and boost your confidence.
Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental solution.
Bridges bring back your smile by getting rid of gaps. They also play a vital role in maintaining general oral health by restoring the bite function and preventing neighbouring teeth from crowding into the space left behind.
Types of Dental Bridges?
There are several types of dental bridges. Each type has different technicalities, which may seem daunting. Don’t worry, as our experienced clinicians can talk you through the options and let you know which will work best for you.
Traditional Bridge Traditional bridges are the most common type of dental bridge and are mainly used when there are healthy teeth on either side of the gap to rely on for support. We may fit crowns to strengthen them before installing your new prosthetic tooth. These types of bridges are typically made from ceramics or porcelain which can fuse well to metal.
Conventional Cantilever bridges use only one tooth for support instead of two, as with traditional dental bridges. If there is a healthy tooth only on one side of the gap, or if the gap only has a tooth on one side, this option may be best.
Maryland Bonded Bridges
A Maryland bridge is also known as a resin-bonded bridge and can be made from a combination of porcelain, metal, plastic and resin. The appearance of the Maryland bridge is like a flying bat, with the false tooth in the centre and the two wings reaching out on either side to bond to the tongue side of the supporting adjacent teeth.
You will first have a consultation to determine whether a bridge is right for you, this may require an X-ray of the required area. We will then discuss all your options.
FAQs
How can I get a bridge?
You will first have a consultation to determine whether a bridge is right for you, this may require an X-ray of your jaw. We will then discuss all your options. If you choose to go ahead with a treatment, you will need a minimum of two appointments.
At your first appointment, we will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap by making slight adjustments to their shape to ensure they can easily support the prosthetic tooth. You will leave this appointment with a temporary bridge fitted while the permanent one is carefully made in the laboratory. You will be consulted and have the final say on the shade used to ensure it matches your existing tooth colour.
At your second appointment, we will replace the temporary bridge with its permanent replacement. Slight adjustments can be made to ensure you are left with a fully seamless look.
A few weeks later, you have the option of a follow-up appointment to ensure you are fully satisfied with your new bridge, and further adjustments can be made if necessary.
