Attending regular checkups allows your dentist to spot any cavities early on or can prevent them entirely. However, if we do find one do not panic! They are quick and easy to treat in a pain-free way.
Traditional black or silver dental fillings are a thing of the past. Despite them not looking natural they were always considered strong and durable and a great choice of filler for cavities. Fast forward to current times, modern tooth-coloured fillings are much stronger and longer-lasting than traditional fillings. Although patients have started to opt more for the natural looking fillings, we do offer all options to our patients.
The decayed or affected portion of the tooth is removed and then filled with your chosen material. Your dentist can help you decide which material is most suitable depending on your health, your preferences and the type of cavity that needs to be repaired.
Depending on the size and nature of your cavity local anaesthetic will be used to numb the area around the tooth. Once it takes effect, we will clean around the affected area to make sure it is clean and free of bacteria and debris.
Your filling choice can then be applied. If you have opted for a natural-looking filling, your dentist will match it to the exact shade of your tooth. The cavity will be prepared, set and smoothed to ensure a great look and feel against your tongue. Your bite will also be checked to ensure your new tooth structure fits well in your mouth.
We do recommend sticking to a soft diet for a day or two after the procedure. You will then be able to go back to your original diet and oral care routine, making sure to take care of the new filling.
